On 3 October 2017, our worlds were turned upside down when our beautiful daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin and friend ALANA was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma, a rare childhood cancer. Alana bravely fought through so much treatment and pain, but devastatingly lost her battle 10 months later on 28 July 2018. She was only 14 years old.

At Alana’s Celebration of Life, her friends and family wrote messages of love that we put into a pretty little blue bottle. We threw the bottle into the ocean off Long Reef Headland NSW and dreamt and hoped that our little blue bottle would eventually wash-up in a beautiful place, somewhere in the world ….. and it did!!

Exactly one year after being told by doctors that there was nothing more they could do for Alana, and four days before the first anniversary of her passing, we received a call from a family in Agnes Water QLD to say that they had found Alana’s message-in-a-bottle. It was covered in barnacles but was completely intact.

This incredible miracle has given us reassurance that Alana is OK and is always with us. A little sunshine has returned to our lives.

Alana’s amazing medical team did everything they could, including trialling two emerging treatment protocols from overseas, in their efforts to fight her cancer. Through this, we were exposed to the incredible research work that is being done in Sydney, across Australia and globally to ultimately eradicate childhood cancer.

The Kids’ Cancer Project is an independent national charity that funds scientific research projects to help kids with many types of cancer. They believe "science is the solution", and so do we.

Our family and friends, together with our new friends in Agnes Water, are determined to help fund medical research to find better treatment options and a cure for all childhood cancers, so that other kids have a better chance of survival.

We are also determined to keep our Alana’s memory alive.

Did you know that every week, three children in Australia die from cancer. Families and communities are changed forever by this terrible disease.
